Important Notice : The DEPLOY project ended data collection  in May 2010 and while the partners continue to work in this area and have other related projects, no live data is available on this site beyond June 1st 2010. This site will remain in place so people can see the kind of work that the partners can deliver and if more information is required then the contact links on the site will continue to function.

Welcome to DEPLOY

Smart Catchment Demonstration - Long-term Deployment of Sensor Monitoring System (DEPLOY)

DEPLOY is a technology demonstration project which aims to show how state of the art technology can be implemented for cost effective, continuous, real-time monitoring of a river catchment. The DEPLOY project is seen as an important building block in the realisation of a wide area autonomous network of sensors capable of monitoring the spatial and temporal distribution of important water quality and environmental target parameters.

The interpretation and analysis is an important part of the development and validation of a sensor monitoring system and the data collected will allow the relevant agencies to monitor and respond adequately and efficiently to spatial and temporal changes in environmental and water quality.

Demonstration Sites

The demonstration sites chosen are located in the River Lee catchment. The sites were selected to include monitoring stations in four zones - one station near the source at Gougane Barra, two stations in Inniscarra reservoir, one station in the main channel of the river and the fifth station in Cork City where the river has entered the estuary and which is tidal and partially saline.

Data is collected in real-time from four stations and near-real-time from the fifth.

What is DEPLOY Demonstrating

There are many things that the DEPLOY partnership are demonstrating but the key elements include :

Deployment Methods - The project demonstrates three different deployment methods.

Intelligent Data Acquisition and Data Delivery - Features like adaptive sampling, data visualisation, alert and alarm management, data security, system remote control, fault tolerance and more will be demonstrated.

Wireless Sensor Networking - The project demonstrates a range of data telemetry techniques.

Effective Maintenance - An important aspect of the project is to establish and demonstrate the maintenance requirements for an autonomous monitoring system and provide insight into how this can be reduced.

Acknowledgements

This project is co-funded by the EPA as part of the Science, Technology, Research and Innovation for the Environment (STRIVE) Programme 2007-2013 and the Marine Institute under the SeaChange - A Marine Knowledge, Research and Innovation Strategy for Ireland 2007-2013.  This programme is financed by the Irish Government under the National Development Plan 2007-2013. It is administered on behalf of the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government by the Environmental Protection Agency, which has the statutory function of co-ordinating and promoting environmental research.

The Partnership

DEPLOY represents an important collaboration between research centres, industry and the public sector. The project involves four partners.

Mobile DEPLOY

As well as viewing data on a PC with a web browser you can also view data with your mobile phone. To see our demonstration of this browse to www.deploy.mobi on your mobile phone.

Also for authorised users a mobile phone can be used for much more than viewing data. When working in the field mobile devices / phones can be used to configure and transmit supplementary data and meta-data from the field directly to the DEPLOY website.
